6 Essential Self-Care Tips Every New Mom Needs to Know

Essential Self-Care Tips Every New Mom Should Know

Are you a first-time mom? Are you struggling to take care of everything you used to? You aren't alone. I think about when I was a first-time mom and cannot believe how difficult it was. Sometimes all you need is a few reminders and assurance that it is okay to take care of yourself.

I Realized I Needed Some First-Time Mom Self-Care

When I became a mom, I didn’t really know how to take care of myself. I know that sounds silly—I mean, I was 29—but sometimes we just forget how to care for ourselves when we have to care for other people. I wasn't showering as much as I should have.  I wasn't moving my body like I should have.  I didn't feel like friends would understand what I was going through.  I felt happy, in disbelieve that I created a human.  I would stare at him all day.  I didn't accept help if it was offered, which I know now was such a gift and I should have graciously accepted it!  I was only focusing on my new little one, and never thinking about myself.  Looking back to the days after my son was born, there are some simple self-care tips I wish someone gently reminded me of.

Six Self-Care Tips for New Moms

1. Prioritize Sleep

First-time moms need sleep too. Getting enough sleep is crucial for physical and emotional well-being. Try to establish a sleep routine and stick to it as much as possible. Sleep deprivation can make everything feel more overwhelming, and it’s important to rest when you can.

I’ve started a routine that includes washing my face, brushing my teeth, spraying my feet with magnesium spray, and then reading with the sound machine on. Without fail, I fall asleep within a half hour! It’s amazing how creating a peaceful bedtime ritual can make such a difference. If your baby’s sleep schedule is erratic, try to find time to rest while they sleep.  Even closing your eyes and trying to sleep can be good enough.  Even if it is only 15 minutes.

2. Incorporate Exercise

Exercise is essential for new moms. It can help reduce stress, boost energy levels, and improve mood. Find an activity that you enjoy, whether it's yoga, running, or dancing, and make time for it. Physical activity releases endorphins, which can help you feel happier and more relaxed.

Since having kids, it has been VERY hard to find time for this. I used to love running, but that’s not happening anymore, so I have tried to walk up to the library every Monday, visit the coffee shop for a treat, or get outside to do yard work and play around with the kids, even if it’s just for 10 minutes a night. Five quick squats while brushing your teeth count too!

I found Yoga with Adriene on YouTube, and I am trying to do this a couple of days a week before the kids wake up. Even a short session of stretching can rejuvenate you and prepare you for the day ahead.  Please do not think I am telling you to get a gym membership and pump iron 7x a week.  Simple movements and stretching will do wonders!

3. Eat Well

First-time moms must eat well! Eating a healthy, balanced diet can help you feel better both physically and emotionally. Try to eat a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and proteins. I lean heavily on dairy and animal proteins because that’s what makes me feel best!

Meal prepping can be a lifesaver when you’re too busy to cook every day. Prepare healthy snacks and meals in advance, so you always have something nutritious on hand. Remember, it’s okay to ask for help—if someone offers to cook for you, accept it graciously!  I wish I asked a friend or family member to create a meal train for my new family of 3.

4. Connect with Friends

Connecting or re-connecting with friends is essential for the mental health of first-time moms. It can help you feel supported and less isolated. Whether it's meeting up for a cup of coffee or having a video chat, make time to connect with friends. Social interactions can boost your mood and provide a much-needed break from your daily routine.

Um, hello Bachelor night!!! Sharing experiences and laughs with friends can be incredibly therapeutic. Don’t hesitate to reach out to other new moms as well; they can relate to what you’re going through and offer support and advice.  You can even reach out to me if you want! I love chatting with new mom friends and I am here for you.

5. Practice Mindfulness

New moms should attempt to practice mindfulness, even if it isn't something you've done before. Mindfulness techniques, such as meditation, deep breathing, or yoga, can help reduce stress and promote relaxation. I know I feel so much better after a good yoga session.

Mindfulness can be as simple as taking a few moments each day to sit quietly and focus on your breathing. Apps like Headspace or Calm can guide you through short meditation sessions. Mindfulness helps you stay present and manage the anxiety that often accompanies new motherhood.

6. Treat Yourself

New moms should be encouraged to treat themselves. Take time to do something nice for yourself, whether it's getting a massage, taking a bubble bath, or buying yourself a small gift (or a big gift…hah, sorry Shane!).

Self-care is not selfish; it’s essential. Remember that taking care of yourself allows you to better care for your baby. Indulge in activities that make you happy and relaxed. This could be anything from reading a book, watching a favorite show, or indulging in a hobby you love.

Becoming a new mom is a beautiful yet challenging experience. It’s easy to get lost in the whirlwind of taking care of a newborn and forget about your own needs. But it’s crucial to remember that your well-being directly affects your ability to care for your baby. By incorporating these self-care tips into your routine, you can ensure that you stay healthy, happy, and well-equipped to handle the demands of motherhood.

Remember, it’s okay to ask for help, and it’s okay to take time for yourself. You are doing an amazing job, and you deserve to feel your best. Embrace these self-care practices and enjoy the journey of motherhood with a little more peace and joy.
